As if it came out of one of the stories about lost roads and unusual heroes, the documentary film Yugo Goes to America by two authors — Filip Grujić and Aleksa Borković — is ready to go the extra mile at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen. Set to be screened in the Special Premiers selection, which has previously shown films by creators such as Ai Weiwei, this story about a small car and its big journey will get the kind of exposure that promises a wide resonance.
The film follows a group of young people, millennials, from Serbia who embark on a long journey across the American continent in a charming Yugo that doesn’t know when to quit. The Yugo — once the object of ridicule and the myth as the “worst car in history” — becomes a metaphor for taking time that heals, for a slow pulse that today’s world lacks. Within the rhythm of that journey emerges a story about a generation, about the search for meaning and about the places we reach only when we give up speed.

“In a world that has sped up to the point of meaninglessness,” the authors say, “Yugo reminds us that sometimes it’s nicer to go slow, stop, fix, look. And arrive not where you planned — but where the road takes you.”
Producer Čarna Vučinić adds that it is a “brave and crazy adventure”, but also a great victory and proof of dedication that has become a symbol of the perseverance of a film crew and a reminder of why, despite everything, it is worth fighting for culture.
The film features Aleksandar Blažić, Ivana Finci, Carlos Ayala, Russell Chave, Lazar Marković, Janko Kroček, Vanja Kroček, Tony Ciminera, Nick Bygrave, Malcolm Bricklin, Alen Rizvanović, Hasan Kapić, Miroslav Kefurt, Sabrina Plaisance-Sia, Jason Vuic and Slaviša Grujić, while the author’s team consists of director of photography Aleksa Borković, screenwriter Filip Grujić, producer Čarna Vučinić, co-producer Vanja Jambrović, editor Kristina Todorović, sound designer and mixer Tihomir Vrbanec, composer Boško Mijušković, sound recordists Ivana Finci and Aleksandar Blažić.

The film was realized with the support of the Eurimages fund, as well as Film Center Serbia and the Croatian Audiovisual Center.
The world premiere will be held on March 18th, 2026, as part of the CPH:DOX festival, which runs from March 11th to 22nd.
