The annual “The Screen of Art” film and contemporary art festival took place from March 5th to March 8th, 2026 in Florence, Italy. During four evenings, a selection of films from the 2025 edition of the festival were shown in the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi.

The festival program offers a diverse selection of productions – from documentaries dedicated to prominent figures from the world of art to artistic and experimental forms that explore the relationship between contemporary art and cinematography. A special place in the program was awarded to the documentary film “Non-Aligned Newsreels: Fragments” by director Mila Turajlić, which was made especially for the Florentine festival Lo Schermo dell’Arte.

In this work, the author deals with African liberation movements from the 1950s, using archival footage from Yugoslav film journals, which she combines with oral histories and contemporary footage from the same locations.

This project represents a combination of archival material and a contemporary documentary approach, characteristic of the works by Mila Turajlić, whose films often explore historical processes through film archives and personal testimonies. The screening of the film at the opening of the festival confirms the importance of her work on the international art and film scene, and opens a festival program that will, over the course of four days, brings to the audience a series of works that connect contemporary art and film in various ways.
