MILICA TOMIĆ

At the beginning of 1890, a political conflict at the railway station in Novi Sad ended in tragedy. At its centre was a private love letter which, in a time when honour and dignity could mean life or death, became a weapon of political blackmail. This historical drama sheds light on the life of Milica Tomić, daughter of Serbian political leader Svetozar Miletić and wife of politician Jaša Tomić. Despite the turmoil surrounding her, Milica continued to fight for her ideals and used her public work to create space for the female voice to be heard. She became the first woman in the Balkans to own and edit a women’s magazine, founded the women’s association Posestrime, and was among the first seven women in Europe to gain the right to vote. Yet, after the Second World War, her work and her name were gradually erased from public memory.
